Dr Tony Gould – 78th Birthday Concert at Jazzlab

4th January 2018 – at Jazzlab, Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia

The edited excerpt below is from the Melbourne Jazz Co-op Newsletter by Martin Jackson

This special concert celebrated the birthday – and ongoing career – of the highly respected pianist/composer Dr. Tony Gould, who retired from his full-time position as Professor of Music at Monash University at the end of 2015. Gould is possibly the most ‘formally’ recognised figure to work in the Australian jazz scene (although he refers to his music as “post-jazz”), Recepient of the Order of Australia, he also received the 2011 Australian Jazz Award “Hall of Fame”. To mark his 78th birthday, he was joined by long-time colleagues Ben Robertson (bass) and Tony Floyd (drums), together with some of his favourite players as guests: Ben Gillespie (trombone); Emma Gilmartin (voice); Rob Burke (tenor saxophone); and, master clarinetist David Griffith (for some Bach and Messiaen pieces). This concert also served as a Book Launch for Gould’s recent publication, “Masters, Mongrels and Madness: Recollections and Observations on Art Music In Australia”
